Press Release - Immediate Release 19.08.02
Poll shows that just 2% of NHS employees are motivated by relationships
with their managers
August 19, 2002 - According to an online poll of over 6,600 NHS employees,
only two per cent claimed that it was the relationship with their managers
that motivated them to stay working in the NHS. The results of the poll
are announced today by NHSDiscounts, the UK's largest website dedicated
to NHS employees.
The poll has been running for three weeks at www.nhsdiscounts.com and
has received over 6,600 votes from NHS employees. According to the results,
the top reason that motivates employees to stay working in the NHS are
the opportunities for promotion and job fulfilment, receiving 45 per cent
of the votes. In addition, just 4 per cent of employees said that they
were motivated by the recent pay rises and only 2 per cent felt that the
levels of autonomy within the workplace were a good source of motivation.
Rob Sanders, Managing Director, NHSDiscounts, says, "We have been overwhelmed
by the response to this poll, it is clearly an issue that a large number
of NHS staff feel very strongly about and the results demonstrate that
the government's plans to improve working and pay conditions within the
NHS still have a long way to go."
NHSDiscounts is an online community dedicated to helping all NHS employees
save money. By negotiating discounts with well-known High Street brands,
the site can save its members at least 10% of their annual salary. Launched
in August 2001, it works closely with the Department of Health and has
attracted over 46,000 members. Each month, a new survey is posted at the
site, asking members to vote on a wide range of controversial issues from,
Tony Blair's re-classification of Cannabis, through to Ronaldo's latest
haircut.

of the NHS to save money. Launched in August 2001, the site is completely
free to join and has already attracted over 46,000 members from all sections

discounts are made available to all members of the NHS via the Internet
and can save staff up to 10% of their annual salary.

With over £2million of NHS wages spent via the site, it has already established
itself as a valuable addition to the NHS family and continues to work
